About Malia
Malia is the definition of a classic party strip: neon lights, packed bars, cheap drinks, and themed events almost every night. Everything is walkable, everyone ends up in the same places, and the atmosphere is huge.
The Malia Strip is officially called Dimokratias Street.
Most people (and all party reps) just call it “The Malia Strip”, but if you ever see it on maps, taxi apps, or accommodation listings, Dimokratias Street is the name you’re looking for.
Fly into Heraklion Airport (HER)
Transfer to Malia (around 30–40 minutes)
Once you arrive, everything is walkable so taxis are rarely needed.
Malia is generally safe, but it’s a heavy party resort, so common sense goes a long way:
- Stay hydrated – the Crete sun is sneaky
- Keep valuables secure on busy nights
- Stick with your group
- Follow rep guidance for events
Malia is cheap and busy – things get messy, but that’s part of the vibe.
Greece has a small nightly tourist tax, paid directly to your accommodation. Amount depends on hotel type.
Alongside your normal holiday bits:
- EU plug adapters (not UK plugs!)
- Theme outfits (white / black / sh*t shirts)
- Beach shoes if you’re hitting the rocky coves, I don’t think the Primark sandals will be your best friend for this one
- Portable/Hand held fan – Greece hits 30°C+ easy and you don’t want to waste your time getting all fresh and ready to head out to be hit with unbearable sweat in places you didn’t realise you could even sweat
- Mini first aid bits for nightlife-related injuries, there will be pharmacies and doctors available but it’s usually more expensive in destination so make sure you are a little prepared to save some extra money
- Spare outfits (nights get messy)
- Cross-body bag for nights on The Strip, keep that phone out of your back pocket and instead zipped away in a trusty bag
- A hoodie/light layer – evenings can get breezy out of peak season and there is nothing worse than being chilly on your holiday
- Aloe Vera to get you through the sun burn
Malia is one of the cheapest party resorts.
Daily budget:
€60–€90 per day
Why it’s cheap:
- Meals from £4
- Drinks deals like 2-for-£5
- Supermarkets full of alcohol deals
- Walk everywhere — hardly any taxis
Compared to Ibiza or Barcelona, Malia is very affordable.
Malia runs on holiday time:
- Bars often go until 2–4am
- Clubs go until 5–6am
- The Strip starts getting busy around 10–11pm
- Peak time = midnight to 3am
You won’t struggle to find something happening…ever.
Just a few simple ones to keep the vibes high:
- Beaches at night are fun but keep an eye on your stuff.
- Don’t buy random drinks or shots off the street (no one needs that type of mystery).
Stick to proper bars and clubs, behave enough to stay out of trouble, and the week will be elite.
